Under-Eye Treatment in Neenah, WI

Four different problems, all of them called dark circles.

Shadow, pigment, thin skin and visible vessels look identical in a bathroom mirror and respond to completely different treatment. This is the area where a proper assessment saves the most money, because three of the four do not respond to what people usually try.

What is actually happening

Work out which of the four you have.

A hollow is a structural shadow. The fat pad under the eye has thinned and the bone beneath it has receded, so the socket edge casts a shadow that no concealer fully covers. This is the version that responds dramatically to volume — and only this version.

Pigment is different. Genuine hyperpigmentation under the eye, common in Mediterranean and South Asian skin, is melanin in the skin itself. Filler underneath it does nothing at all, and adding volume to pigmented skin can make it read darker.

Vascular darkness is the blue-purple cast of vessels showing through skin that is only around half a millimetre thick. It worsens with fatigue and dehydration because the vessels dilate. It also worsens as the skin thins with age.

And then there is texture — crepey, finely lined skin that catches the light badly regardless of colour or volume. This one responds to collagen work and to nothing else.

What we can do about it

Four options, each for a different one of those four.

This is not a ranked list in the usual sense. The right choice is determined by which mechanism is producing your circles, which is why we look before we recommend.

  1. 01
Facial Filler — tear trough and cheek

    For structural hollowing only

Transformative on a true hollow and unforgiving everywhere else — this is the least tolerant area in facial aesthetics. Frequently the correct placement is the cheek above the hollow rather than the hollow itself. It does nothing for pigment.

  2. 02
    SkinPen Microneedling

    For thin, crepey under-eye skin

Thickens the dermis over a course of four to six sessions, which improves both the texture and the vascular darkness showing through it. Gradual and safe. It will not fill a hollow.

  3. 03
    Skinvive

For skin quality rather than shape

Hydration placed into the dermis to improve smoothness and light reflection in the area. Subtle by design. If you want the under-eye to look better without any change in shape, this is the option.

  4. 04
    VI Medium Depth Peel

    For genuine pigmentation

Addresses melanin-based darkness, which is the one type of circle that filler makes worse rather than better. Applied with care given the proximity to the eye, and always in the low-UV months.

What we would recommend

How we tell them apart, and what we do first.

There is a simple in-clinic test: gently stretch the skin under the eye. If the darkness disappears, it is a shadow or vascular and volume or collagen work will help. If it stays exactly as dark, it is pigment, and filler is the wrong answer no matter how much you want it to be the right one.

For true hollowing, we usually start above the hollow. Restoring the cheek reduces the shadow without putting product in the most technically demanding site on the face, and a surprising number of people need nothing further.

Under-eye filler is done conservatively and reviewed at two weeks. Overfilled tear troughs are one of the few aesthetic outcomes that look worse than the original problem, and they are also slow and expensive to correct.

The least forgiving area on the face. Treated conservatively.

What to expect

What each route involves.

Filler
One appointment, reviewed at two weeks, lasting twelve to eighteen months. Bruising is more likely here than anywhere else on the face, so allow a clear week.
Microneedling
Four to six sessions, four weeks apart, with results building for three to six months. Downtime is around 48 hours of pinkness per session.
What no treatment fixes
Puffiness from fluid, allergies or a genuine fat prolapse. Those are medical or surgical questions, and we will tell you which one you have rather than treating around it.
Cost
Filler is priced per syringe and most under-eye work uses one or less. Microneedling is per session with member pricing. Both are on the published price list.

Facial Filler is $750 at our Neenah studio. It is the treatment most plans for this concern are built around, and every other figure on this page’s options is published too.

Common questions

What people ask about under-eye circles and hollows.

Why do I still look tired after sleeping properly?

Because most under-eye shadow is structural rather than fatigue. It is either a hollow casting a shadow, thin skin showing the vessels underneath, or pigmentation — and none of the three respond to sleep. That is worth knowing before spending more on eye cream: if the cause is a hollow, no topical will reach it, and if the cause is pigment, filler would be the wrong answer.

Can filler fix dark circles?

Only if the darkness is a shadow cast by a hollow. Filler restores volume, so it removes shadows — but it does nothing for pigment in the skin and nothing for vessels showing through thin skin. Placing filler under pigmented skin can even make the area look darker. This is why the assessment matters more here than anywhere else.

Is under-eye filler safe?

In experienced hands, yes, but it is genuinely the most technically demanding area in facial aesthetics — thin skin, unforgiving anatomy and important vessels nearby. It should be done conservatively, with the right product, by an injector who does it regularly. Anyone treating it casually is the risk, not the treatment.

Why do I look tired even when I have slept?

Because what reads as tiredness is usually structural rather than physiological. A hollow under the eye casts a shadow in every light and at every hour, and no amount of sleep changes the anatomy producing it. Sleep and hydration affect vascular darkness slightly; they do nothing for the shadow.

Will microneedling help under my eyes?

Yes, for the right problem. It thickens skin that has become thin and crepey, which improves fine lines and reduces how much of the underlying vasculature shows through. It is gradual, it needs a course of four to six, and it is the safest option in the area. It cannot fill a hollow.

What if my under-eyes are puffy rather than dark?

Puffiness is a different problem and often not one we can treat. Morning fluid retention responds to sleep position and salt; allergic puffiness needs the allergy addressed; a true fat prolapse — the permanent bag — is a surgical correction. We will tell you which one it is, including when the answer is that we are not the right clinic.

The stretch test takes five seconds.

It tells us whether your circles are shadow or pigment, and that single answer decides everything else about the plan.
