What is actually happening
The laser breaks it up. Your immune system removes it.
Tattoo ink sits in particles too large for immune cells to carry away, which is what makes a tattoo permanent in the first place. The laser delivers energy fast enough to shatter those particles into fragments small enough to be cleared.
The clearing is the slow part, and it is entirely your body's work. Over six to eight weeks the lymphatic system carries the fragments away, which is why sessions are spaced that far apart. Treating more often does not speed it up — it just injures skin that has not finished the last round.
Ink colour is the main variable. Black and dark blue absorb across a wide range and respond best. Green and light blue are harder. Yellow, white and some pastels frequently do not respond meaningfully at all, and white ink can darken on treatment.
Location matters too. Tattoos closer to the heart clear faster because lymphatic drainage is better — an upper arm piece typically clears in fewer sessions than the same tattoo on an ankle.

Expect a year. Six to twelve sessions at six to eight week intervals is the realistic range, and a large or heavily saturated professional piece can exceed it. Anyone quoting three sessions has not looked at the tattoo properly.
Fading for a cover-up is a different and much shorter goal. If a new artist only needs the existing piece lightened, that is often three or four sessions rather than a full course — tell us that is the plan and we treat toward it.
We photograph before every session and we are honest about plateaus. Some tattoos stop responding while ink is still visible, and continuing to treat past that point costs you money for no further change.

What people ask about tattoo removal.
Can it be removed completely, or only faded?
It depends on the ink and we cannot promise clearance before seeing it. Black ink on lighter skin clears most reliably. Greens, light blues and some cosmetic pigments are stubborn and occasionally do not clear fully. Amateur tattoos usually go more easily than professional ones. If your goal is a cover-up rather than removal, say so — that needs far fewer sessions and changes the plan entirely.
How many sessions does tattoo removal take?

Each session is short, and cooling makes a substantial difference. It is genuinely uncomfortable, and we would rather say so than describe it as mild.
Will my tattoo be completely gone?
Often, but not always, and the ink colours decide it. Black and dark blue usually clear completely. Green and light blue can be stubborn. Will it leave a scar?
The laser itself rarely scars when the settings are correct and the intervals are respected. Most scarring after removal comes from picking blisters and scabs during healing, or from treating too frequently. Follow the aftercare and the risk is low — and if the tattoo was already scarred, that scarring stays.
