Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable for fullness under the chin, the soft pad of fat most people call a double chin. There is no surgery and no incision, and the treatment itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes at our Neenah studio.
The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a copy of a substance your body already makes to break down dietary fat. Injected into the fat under the chin, it destroys those fat cells, and your body clears them over the following weeks. Once a fat cell is gone it cannot store fat again, which is why the result is permanent in a way most aesthetic treatments are not.
Permanent is the selling point and the reason to be careful. Kybella suits a defined pocket of fat under the chin on someone at a fairly stable weight. If the fullness comes from loose skin, or from a chin that sits back, taking fat away will not give you a cleaner line, and under loose skin it can look worse. Your first visit is a consultation to work out which it is before anything is injected.
The part to plan around is the swelling. Expect the area under the chin to be noticeably swollen for several days, often with some firmness, tenderness and numbness. That is the treatment working rather than something going wrong, but it shows, so book it in a quiet week rather than before an event.

What if my problem is loose skin rather than fat?
Then Kybella is the wrong treatment, and it can make things look worse by removing the fat that was filling the skin. That distinction is what the consultation is for. Where the answer is laxity, we would be talking about radiofrequency or jawline filler instead.
